Avalanche Activity

Favorable backcountry touring conditions, isolated trigger-sensitive snowdrifts in shady terrain

Avalanche danger is low. Favorable touring conditions prevail. There are still isolated danger zones on steep shady slopes where a slab can be triggered by large additional loading. Due to higher temperatures, small naturally triggered avalanches cannot be ruled out on rocky slopes or in smooth, grass-covered terrain.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack was able to settle, but the surfaces are often covered with a breakable melt-freeze crust. Exposed zones are generally windblown, gullies, bowls and leeward slopes are filled to the brim with drifts. On steep shady slopes, soft layers still exist inside the old snow. At intermediate altitudes, snow depths are low.

Weather Synopsis

On Sunday, westerly winds will bring cloudbanks over the mountains of Styria. It will be sunniest in the morning, and will remain dry. Westerly winds will be brisk to stormy at high altitudes in Upper Styria, in the southern massifs winds will be lighter. Temperatures will rises temporarily. At 2000 m: -3 to 0 degrees; at 1500 m: 0 to +1 degree.

Tendency

Early on Monday a cold front will bring a cold front, with fresh snowfall and storm winds. In the southern massifs, up to 15 cm of fresh snow is anticipated. Stormy NW winds. Avalanche danger is expected to increase as a result of trigger-sensitive snowdrift accumulations being generated.
