Avalanche Activity

NC for 10.4: As the day progresses unstable windslab building on N to E aspects above 1000m, esp. corrie rims, gully tops. Mod Haz.

Forecast Snow Stability: As the day progresses, localised accumulations of unstable windslab will develop on Northerly to Easterly aspects above 1000 metres. The greatest instability will be where depth is achieved on steep, wind sheltered terrain such as coire rims, gully tops and crag aprons. Fragile cornices will also develop above these aspects. Elsewhere the old snowpack will remain well bonded and stable throughout. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: During the night rain will fall as sleet and snow at summit levels, storm force South-South-Easterly winds will gradually ease. Cooler during the day with precipitation falling as snow above 1000 metres on strong South-South-West to Westerly winds. Observed Weather Influences: A dry day with storm force South-South-Easterly winds. The freezing level rose to above the summits by midday. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack remains well bonded and stable throughout. The largest areas are around steep coire back walls and the plateau above 1000 metres with mostly ribbons of snow below this altitude. The avalanche hazard is Low.
