Avalanche Activity

GC for 18/12. Unstable windslab persisting on N-E aspects and developing during day on W-N aspects above 800m. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will persist, mainly on North to East aspects above 800 metres and continue to develop due to wind redistribution during the day on West to North aspects. Wind sheltered locations such as gullies and corrie rims will be particularly affected. Recently formed cornices will be fragile. Slopes exposed to the wind will be generally stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be mainly dry until the afternoon when showers falling as snow above 400 metres develop. Moderate South-Easterly winds overnight become strong during he day. The freezing level will be around 500 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Snow showers, heavy at times, overnight and through the day. Moderate to strong South-Westerly winds. The freezing level was around 650 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of moderate to poorly bonded windslab are present in wind sheltered locations mainly on North to East aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices also, mainly above these aspects. The shallow covering of snow on other aspects and at lower elevations is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
