Winter ascents of Mount Shasta are much more difficult and dangerous than in late spring and early summer. Weather is harsher and more unpredictable. Conditions are colder and icier. There are far fewer climbers around to assist if something goes wrong. All of these things make a winter ascent more challenging and committing. Make sure your team has the necessary skills, experience, and judgment before embarking on a winter climb. Expert crampon and ice axe technique is mandatory. Carry the proper climbing and rescue equipment, including navigational tools. Know how to use your equipment. Things can get serious real fast on Mt. Shasta, despite being 15 minutes off the interstate. Be prepared.
