Weak layers are buried in the snowpack 2-3 feet deep across all aspects and elevations. Although time has decreased the sensitivity of these layers, triggering an avalanche is still possible on specific steep terrain, particularly where wind has stiffened the snow surface. Look and listen for signs of instability with signs of cracking or collapsing and practice safe protocols by traveling one at a time in avalanche terrain.

    Persistent weak layers formed during November are buried 2-3 feet deep across all aspects and elevations. In most areas the entire snowpack contains weak structure lacking a hard slab formation, decreasing the likelihood of triggering an avalanche. Slabs could exist on isolated terrain features such as steep sun exposed slopes or previously wind loaded terrain. These areas could have increased sensitivity to avalanches. 

Avalanche Discussion

The main concern today are persistent weak layers that are buried 2-3 feet deep and vary in nature across aspects. Cold and mostly dry conditions in November created weak faceted snow on northerly aspects. Southerly aspects contain melt freeze crusts with poor bonding structure to the upper portion of the snowpack. Togwotee lacks any slab formation due to consistently cold temperatures. Although the entire snowpack structure is weak, avalanches will be difficult to trigger without a slab. Careful assessment of terrain will be necessary to identify where slabs could exist where wind and settlement have stiffened the recent snow.
