Lo esencial

Firm snow found in avalanche terrain is unlikely to avalanche today. Watch out for isolated pockets of soft snow and easy boot penetration as a sign of instability. Continue to make slope-specific stability assessments and use thoughtful travel techniques in avalanche terrain.

    Wind slabs found at middle and upper elevations are likely to be stubborn after 24+ hours of consistent, extreme northwest winds of 90-100 mph. Snow surfaces in most locations are expected to be firm and supportive, greatly lessening the impact on a buried weak layer of loose, granular faceted crystals near an older ice crust. Triggering an avalanche on that weak layer is unlikely, but not impossible.

Avalanche Discussion

History shows that extreme wind events scour away any soft snow and greatly stiffen remaining snow surfaces. What remains is often a wind sculpted, pencil hard supportive surface which is consistent in most areas. Remaining pockets of softer snow with a structure capable of sliding are likely to be very isolated. 

Cold temperatures and high wind speeds will challenge anyone today, regardless of experience. Despite LOW danger, no mountain environment is without risk. Continue to make deliberate and informed travel decisions. As always, if something doesn't feel right, don't be afraid to back off and return another day.

The Lion Head Summer Trail is CLOSED due to increased avalanche hazard. The Lion Head Winter Route is OPEN and the most direct route to the Mount Washington Summit from Pinkham Notch.
