Avalanche Activity

The danger of moist and wet avalanches will already increase in the late morning.

The conditions are generally favourable for ski touring. The surface of the snowpack will freeze, but a strong crust will not form and will already soften in the late morning. If there is cloud cover at night combined with warm air, the avalanche risk will already be 2 (moderate) by the morning because The surface of the snowpack will cool hardly at all during the overcast night. And so conditions in the mid-mountain range will already be somewhat unfavourable. In the late morning the natural activity of moist and wet avalanches will gradually increase. In starting zones where no previous releases have taken place and on very steep slopes more small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized moist snow slides and avalanches are possible. Backcountry tours and ascents to alpine cabins should be concluded timely. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes moderate southeasterly wind, mostly small wind slabs formed on Monday. They have formed at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions.

Snowpack Structure

Colder than expected: The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust. New snow and wind slabs are lying on a wet old snowpack. At higher altitudes, snow cover becomes thinner and patchy; it is better at mid-altitudes, which are less exposed to the wind. Below approximately 1900 m hardly any snow is lying. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes.

Tendency

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation more moist and wet avalanches are possible. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise to settling of the snowpack.
