Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs require caution.

The hard wind slabs of the last four days are lying on a crust in particular on sunny slopes and at high altitude. These can as before be released by a single winter sport participant. In particular on steep north, northeast and northwest facing slopes the avalanches can be triggered in the faceted old snow and reach medium size. Caution is to be exercised in particular on wind-loaded slopes, and in gullies and bowls at elevated altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind, snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. Over a wide area wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. The surface of the snowpack will soften later than the day before. Faceted weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. Adjacent to ridgelines at high altitude snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
