Avalanche Activity

Wet snow represents the main danger.

Up to 2800 m rain has fallen since Saturday in some localities. In particular on very steep slopes and at the base of rock walls medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of the rain. In some places avalanches can penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack. Ground avalanches are possible in particular on steep shady slopes.

Snowpack Structure

The rain gave rise to increasing and thorough wetting of the snowpack in all aspects below approximately 2800 m. These conditions will cause a weakening of the snowpack. The snowpack is wet and its surface has a crust that is not capable of bearing a load.

Tendency

Above approximately 1800 m snow will fall on Wednesday over a wide area. In some localities up to 30 cm of snow will fall above approximately 2200 m. As a consequence of the precipitation the prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase. Above approximately 2000 m danger level 2 (moderate) will be reached. In localities where more snow falls danger level 3 (considerable) may be reached.
