Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche where you find stiff, wind-drifted snow resting on top of a weak layer of cohesionless snow at upper elevations near and above treeline. The most dangerous slopes face northwest through north to southeast just below ridgelines. You can avoid this problem by sticking to slopes where you sink deep into the snow past your shins or knees, and the snow feels loose and cohesionless throughout.

If you are traveling on shady slopes steeper than about 35 degrees, you could trigger a smaller but still concerning loose avalanche. These will mostly be concerning on long, sustained slopes where even a small avalanche can take you for a dangerous ride, and if you are above a terrain trap, such as rocks or a creek, it could seriously injure you.
