Avalanche Activity

GC16/3New snow overnight then dry, unstable windslab in sheltered gullies+NW-N-SE mainly 850m+ cornices fragile. Av.hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: The existing snowpack will remain stable and will be firm and icy on higher and exposed slopes. New snow overnight will form areas of unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a North-West through North-East to South-Easterly aspects mainly above 850 metres. Where these accumulations achieve significant depth bonding will be poor. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Hill snow and fresh or strong variable South-Westerly winds will affect the area overnight. Dry conditions through the day and moderate South-Westerly winds are expected. The freezing level will be around 800 to 900 metres through the day. Observed Weather Influences: Cold conditions and a light dusting of new snow affected the area overnight. Becoming brighter and dry with strong South-Westerly winds today. The freezing level is around 1000 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack re-froze overnight giving a firm and icy surface in most areas. Shallow pockets of windslab exist in gully exits and sheltered lee slopes. The avalanche hazard is Low.
