Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs are to be assessed with care and prudence. The conditions are dangerous for backcountry touring and other off-piste activities in steep terrain.

The fresh snow and in particular the many sometimes large wind slabs can be released easily, or, in isolated cases naturally. The wind slabs are to be found especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls in all aspects and generally at high altitudes. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on steep east to south to west facing slopes. Sometimes the avalanches in these loacations are dangerously large. On steep slopes medium-sized dry avalanches are to be expected as a consequence of the new snow. This snow can be released very easily in all aspects and generally in areas close to the tree line. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and restraint.

Snowpack Structure

40 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Wednesday above approximately 1500 m. Up to 5 cm of snow, but less in some localities, will fall until the evening in all altitude zones. The northerly wind has transported the new snow significantly. The fresh snow as well as the sometimes deep wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on shady slopes.

Tendency

Gradual decrease in danger of dry avalanches as the snowfall eases. Gradual increase in danger of moist snow slides as a consequence of solar radiation.
