Avalanche Activity

NC 12.01 Localised windslab on NW, N, NE and E aspects above 1000m, also present on lower elevations. Unstable cornices. Mod Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised accumulations of unstable windslab will continue to develop and gain depth on wind sheltered North-West through North to East aspects above 1000 metres. Areas most affected will be gully tops and coire rims, here cornices will continue to develop. Wind exposed slopes will be firm and generally stable. Below 1000m avoidable, isolated, deep accumulations will also be present on wind sheltered locations, such as shallow gullies and steep banks. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The winds will be gale force, South-Westerlies, easing to fresh by early morning. During the daytime the wind will back Southerly and gain in strength returning to gale force by the end of the forecast period. Snow showers overnight will give way to a brief dry period during the early morning before further snow showers during the afternoon. The freezing level will be generally around 800 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight, Snow showers eased to give a largely dry day with a few brighter spells. There was significant wind transportation of snow on the storm force South-Westerly winds. The freezing level was around 800 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised and generally shallow accumulations of windslab has developed on North-West through North to East aspects above 1000 meters. West and East aspects are also affected due to cross-loading. Areas most affected are gully tops, corrie rims, and high, wind sheltered locations. Deeper accumulations are also present in wind sheltered locations on lower slopes. Wind exposed slopes are firm, icy and generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
