Lo esencial

While unlikely, small wet loose avalanches are not impossible today. Remain cautious on steep solar aspects, especially around rocky areas. If you find yourself sinking into unconsolidated wet snow past your ankles or encounter wet, greasy snow atop a crust, consider changing aspects or moving to gentler terrain. If climbing, come prepared to arrest a fall and be mindful of overhead hazards.

    Any wet snow instabilities that develop are most probable on steep solar aspects around rock outcroppings. Warm temperatures and several above freezing nights may increase the chances of finding unstable snow. Ankle-deep boot penetration or greater into wet, unconsolidated snow or weak, wet snow that sluffs easily on top of a crust should direct you to gentler terrain or colder aspects. Travelling early will also help reduce your exposure to the instability. While any resulting avalanche would be small, the consequences of being caught in extreme terrain are the greater hazard. Continue to give cornices a wide margin when traveling above and below them.

    A small wet loose avalanche that occurred last month in Powder Bowl. The slide was likely triggered by rockfall and ran approximately 200 feet. This is the type of extreme, isolated terrain near rock features to exercise caution around.

Avalanche Discussion

Climbing: Current hazards include icefall, rockfall, and firm, icy surfaces with slide-for-life potential.  A full mountaineering kit is non‑negotiable: 12‑point crampons (not microspikes), an ice axe, a helmet, and the skills to use them well. We can't stress it enough. Be prepared and know how to use your equipment. Have the courage to turn around if the weather, your skills, or anything else just doesn't feel right. The mountain will be there next time. Managing risk means recognizing and correcting small issues early, before they compound into a situation with serious consequences. As always, make your own assessments as you travel through the backcountry and be prepared to change your route or objective if you observe signs of unstable snow.
