It may be possible to trigger a consequential avalanche in terrain where the wind has deposited slabs of stiffened snow on all aspects near and above the treeline. Loose avalanches will also be a concern in steep unsupported terrain. Keep an eye out for signs of instability today, such as surface cracks and recent avalanche activity, and be ready for conditions to change throughout the day.

    Snow showers over the last 24 hrs brought 2-7” of snow to the forecast area with shifting wind direction and light to moderate speeds. Continued snow showers today and increasing winds out of the north and east may lead to continued slab development near and above treeline. While it may be possible to find fresh wind slab development on all aspects, increasing northerly winds today are most likely to lead to continued slab development on more solar aspects. Keep an eye out for clues that indicate nearby wind deposits such as fresh drifts, recent cornice growth, hollow upside-down feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces.  Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, and cross-loaded depressions. Be on the lookout for signs of instability, such as shooting cracks in upside-down snow and recent avalanche activity.  Be particularly cautious in areas with higher snow totals from yesterday’s storm. This may include higher elevations and areas closer to the crest in the northern half of the forecast area.

    Up to 7" of light and unconsolidated snow fell during last night's storm, with the potential for more today. Temperatures reached into the single digits overnight and are expected to remain well below freezing today. This new snow has fallen on a variety of surfaces ranging from hard and slick surfaces to loose unconsolidated facets.  We do not expect this new snow to bond well to old snow surfaces. It will be possible to initiate loose surface sluffs on steep and sheltered slopes at all elevations. While this will be most concerning in sheltered areas near and below treeline, we can’t rule out the possibility in protected areas above treeline. Loose-dry avalanches will be most concerning in areas with terrain features that elevate the consequences of an avalanche. This may include alpine couloirs, steep or extreme terrain, and around terrain traps like road cuts, creek beds, or cliffbands.

Avalanche Discussion

New snow will be a powerful draw for the backcountry enthusiast today. However, if you find yourself heading into the backcountry, remember that it may be possible to find unstable snow on all aspects and at all elevations. Wind slab avalanches will be most concerning near and above treeline. However, prevailing winds out of the northeast are likely to keep the most concerning wind slabs confined to more atypical solar aspects. Loose dry surface sluffs may be more front and center for the backcountry enthusiast today. Monitor conditions closely as you move through the hills today, and keep in mind that this new snow will likely have hidden many obstacles like rocks and fallen trees just below the surface.
