A chance exists of triggering a large wind slab avalanche above treeline on leeward north, east, and south aspects. Wind-deposited snow will be most reactive just below ridgelines, on mid-slope moraines, around rock outcropings, and along the upper margins of bowls. Wind slabs often appear dune-shaped or pillow-like, and may consist of soft or hard snow. Cracking or blocking within the new snow are clear signs of instability. Watch for actively blowing snow, newly formed wind lips, and cornices, which indicate areas to avoid.
Winds on Mount Shasta can behave oddly and unpredictably. Observations above treeline have been limited. The depths and reactivity of wind slabs have not been verified. If you choose to travel in the alpine, be prepared to self-evaluate conditions. The potential for avalanche danger will increase over the afternoon hours as strong winds and precipitation re-enter the region.
A recent observation yesterday from a hike on Green Butte Ridge found a foot of heavy, wet snow at 8,200 feet that was well bonded and displayed no signs of wind effect.
