The recent combination of snowfall over buried weak layers make triggering an avalanche possible today. Collapsing and cracking are signs of unstable snow. Evaluate the terrain and dig down in the snow to see if weak sugary snow exists in the terrain you plan to ride or ski.

    Weak snow was formed on all aspects and elevations during mid November. A stout melt freeze crust with sugary facets below is present on southerly aspects. This crust was buried on November 26. On northerly aspects combinations of near surface facets and surface hoar exist from the mid November period. At the upper elevations slab depths range from 1-3 ft. Slab depths are slightly thinner at the mid elevations where wind transport was not as prevalent with the last storm. At the low elevations weak snow exists but it generally lacks a sizeable cohesive slab. Cracking and collapsing within the snowpack are signs of instability. Digging a snowpit to figure out if these layers exist can inform your travel decisions. 

Avalanche Discussion

Weak snow structure exists at Togwotee and throughout the Absaroka Range. Northern aspects have a variety of near surface facets and surface hoar from mid November, as well as areas of depth hoar that formed at the end of October. Southern aspects have crust/facet combinations. Slab depths range from 1-3 feet at this point are generally most reactive in areas where the wind and settlement have stiffened the most recent snow.
