Avalanche Activity

Moist and wet avalanches and natural avalanches are possible. In addition an appreciable danger of moist slab avalanches exists.

As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of gliding avalanches and wet snow slides being released will increase in particular on very steep sunny slopes at intermediate and high altitudes. Individual small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized gliding avalanches and snow slides are possible above approximately 1700 m. In addition an appreciable danger of moist slab avalanches exists. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on northeast to north to northwest facing aspects above approximately 1800 m and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain.

Snowpack Structure

The weather will be mild. As a consequence of rising temperatures and solar radiation and the strong foehn wind, the snowpack consolidated. The surface of the snowpack will soften quickly. In very isolated cases weak layers exist in the centre of the old snowpack in particular above approximately 1800 m. Such avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls in northeast to north to northwest facing aspects above approximately 1800 m and in shady places that are protected from the wind. The rain will give rise on Friday to rapid and thorough wetting of the snowpack below approximately 1700 m.
