Lo esencial

Human-triggered storm slab avalanches are likely as storm snow settles over a crust.

Staying in simple terrain, and avoidance of overhead hazards are key as storm snow stabilizes.

    Probabilidad
    Likely
    Tamaño
    1.5–2.5

30 to 40 cm of snow has accumulated during the storm, developing storm slabs at all elevations. Slabs are most reactive where they overlie a hard crust or hard wind pressed surface snow which is fairly wide spread in Crowsnest and Castle.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain about how quickly the snowpack will recover and gain strength.

Avalanche Summary

On Tuesday, numerous size 1 to 1.5 dry loose avalanches were reported near Castle.

Snowpack Summary

Roughly 30 to 40 cm of storm snow has accumulated. Storm slabs are building over old surfaces of:

  • wind-pressed snow in high elevation lees

  • crust on exposed windward features, south aspects and low elevations

  • soft, faceted snow, possibly topped with small surface hoar crystals in sheltered areas.

The remainder of the snowpack is well consolidated, containing a number of crusts which are not of concern at this time.

Weather Summary

Tuesday Night

Wednesday
Mostly cloudy. 1 to 2 cm of snow. 10 km/h southeast ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -21 °C.

Thursday
Mix of sun and clouds. 1 cm of snow. 20 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -17 °C.

Friday
Mix of sun and clouds. 1 to 2 cm of snow. 30 km/h west ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -13 °C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be aware of the potential for loose avalanches in steep terrain where snow hasn't formed a slab.
  • Don't let storm day fever lure you into consequential terrain.
  • Continue to make conservative terrain choices while the storm snow settles and stabilizes.
  • Be aware of the potential for human triggerable storm slabs at lower elevations, even on small features.
