Avalanche conditions continue to be dangerous. Areas of instability persist, that can produce dangerous deep slab avalanches. These slabs are highly unpredictable, destructive and can be triggered by the weight of a single person. In these conditions a lack of avalanche activity is not a reliable indicator of the potential hazard. The only reasonable way to manage this hazard is to leave a wide range of safety and stick to slopes that are not an issue. Choose low angle, simple terrain that is not exposed to steep overhanging slopes.

    The potential for humans to trigger slab avalanches with depths to four feet poses a serious threat to backcountry users. If triggered these dangerous slabs will fail on a deeply buried layer of faceted snow that persist on all aspects. These slabs could be triggered by the weight of a single person especially in steep avalanche paths where areas of deep and shallow snow exist together. Previous tracks are not an indication of stability. Deep persistent slab avalanches are the most difficult avalanche problem to assess, predict and manage. They can remain unstable for weeks or months.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Limited moisture in a cold air mass could produce some snow flurries and areas of light snowfall. Skies will be mostly cloudy. Temperatures will be mostly in the single digits above and below zero. Winds will become westerly and increase to 5 to 15 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE. Areas of unstable snow exist. At the mid and upper elevations large avalanches could be human triggered by the weight of a single person on a variety of aspects. These deep persistent slabs are often triggered from areas where the snow is shallow and weak and are particularly difficult to forecast and manage. Tracks on a slope are not an indication of stability.
