Lo esencial

The General Avalanche Hazard is MODERATE at mid and upper elevations. Five to eight inches of new snow Monday, driven by southwest winds created soft slabs to two feet in depth on lee slopes in exposed areas. Beneath the newer snow deeper hard slabs, 3 to 5 feet in depth persist. Most of these deeper slides have been on convex slopes in areas that receive extra loading from cliffs or chutes above. More substantial triggers such as snowmobiles, large groups, or surface slides may be needed to initiate these hard slabs. At the lower elevations avalanches are unlikely due to a shallow snowpack.

Avalanche Discussion

Mostly cloudy skies are expected Thursday following light accumulations of light snow overnight. Cold temperatures are to continue with mountain highs in the single digits. The possibility will continue for backcountry travelers to trigger surface slabs in steep wind loaded terrain to depths of two feet. Although unlikely and in limited areas, a slight potential remains to trigger slides involving deeper weak layers of snow.
