Lo esencial

Overnight lows in the mountains were about ten degrees cooler than yesterday. The chance for wet slabs, wet loose slides and cornice failures will all increase as the day warms. Monitor conditions and plan to avoid avalanche terrain after snow surfaces have significantly softened.

Problemas de aludes

  • Wet Slabs

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    1–2

Once snow surfaces soften, backcountry travelers could trigger wet slab avalanches up to two feet in depth on steep, snow covered slopes.

  • Loose Wet

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    1–2

Sunshine and warm temperatures may cause wet loose slides to occur on a variety of aspects in very steep terrain. At the upper elevations, these loose snow slides could trigger wet slab avalanches.

  • Cornices

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    2–3

Huge cornices developed over the winter. Cornice failures are possible today, which could trigger large, deep slab avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies on Friday. Overnight lows in the mountains will be around five degrees warmer than Thursday before topping out in the mid 40s in the afternoon. Valley locations will see lows in the mid 20s before rebounding into the mid 50s. Southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will range from 15 to 25 miles per hour. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be mostly LOW Friday morning before increasing to MODERATE after snow surfaces soften. Wet slabs up to 18 inches in depth, along with shallow wet loose slides, will be possible in steep terrain. Cornice failures remain a concern, and they have some potential to trigger large, deep wet slabs in isolated areas.
