Human triggered avalanches remain possible at all elevations today. Soft slabs that are around a foot thick will be reactive to human triggering, especially on steep, unsupported slopes that receive direct sunlight. These slabs could trigger much larger avalanches involving old, weak snow from early in the season. Avalanches will be most likely in steep and wind-loaded terrain. Looks for signs of wind affect like drifting or cornices and cracking or collapsing.

    Lingering beneath a hard slab and new snow lies weak layers buried 2-3’ deep (and deeper). The Feb 18th layer is our main concern but weak basal facets and DEPTH HOAR is present throughout the forecast area.  The Feb 18 layer is composed of a facet + crust combination found on solar aspects. New snow and fresh wind slabs will stress these buried weak layers and increase the chance of triggering a large avalanche. Terrain with an increased likelihood of triggering one of these avalanches includes:

    • Shallow snowpack: Weaker buried layers of snow .
    • Wind-affected: Terrain where wind has formed firm, cohesive slabs of snow.
    • Steep: Over 35° slopes.

    Many cornices are reaching their zenith for the season. Be aware that these large cornices often break further back than anticipated and can trigger unusually large avalanches for the given conditions.

    Soft wind slabs that average 1-2 feet in thickness will be reactive to human triggering in specific locations throughout the middle and upper elevations. Humans are mostly likely to trigger these slabs in steep, unsupported terrain features that are exposed to direct sunlight. Terrain features could include steep ridges and spines, couloirs, and slopes in and around cliff bands. 

    These wind slabs could be hard and stubborn to trigger and large in wind exposed areas like Angle Mountain and softer but easier to trigger in more sheltered terrain like Maverick Creek or Two Ocean mountain.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent avalanche activity has included persistent slabs up to size 2 with crown depths ranging from 1-5 feet. Cornices are very large now so stay further back than you might think becessary. A cornice fall triggered a D2 avalanche recently so beware of this overhead hazard near cliff bands where these cornices are present, especially when the cliff is in the sun. Cornices can fail naturally and without warning.
