Fresh snow and wind have created fresh slabs on leeward slopes, these slabs could be up to 2 feet deep and easy to trigger in steep terrain. Cracking around your skis and slabby upside down snow are signs you have found a wind slab and is something to be wary of.

Although becoming more difficult to initiate, there is still a possibility of triggering a hard slab avalanche that breaks 2 to 4 feet deep on weak snow formed in January. Very steep, shaded terrain above 8,000 feet is most suspect. Signs of instability may not be present, so be diligent in your terrain selection as these avalanches warrant caution.

    In the last 24 hours a couple of inches to over a foot of snow has fallen, this was accompanied by moderate to strong winds with gusts in the 50s and higher. Soft slabs have formed on leeward slopes that could be up to 2 feet deep, sensitive to the weight of a rider, and run faster than expected due to the slick crust that these slabs may sit atop. Wind slabs could range from small to large and potentially dangerous, especially in consequential terrain. The amount of snow that fell in the Tetons is varied, if you are in a zone that seems to have received more snow, expect larger and potentially more sensitive wind slabs. Wind speeds are forecast to increase again, so watch for new slab formation throughout the day.

    It will be possible to trigger dry loose avalanches in sheltered and extreme terrain where new snow overlays a slick crust from the 3/7 rain event. These will break below your skis and be easy to identify, but could knock you off your feet if you let your guard down.

    Weak snow formed in January sits 2 to 4 feet deep below a hard slab. While this weak layer has been slowly healing and becoming harder to trigger, there is still a possibility of initiating a dangerous avalanche that fails on facets and buried surface hoar. Weak snow is mostly preserved and distributed above 8,000 feet on shady aspects and is most concerning on slopes that are over 35° in slope angle. Field work and observations indicate that the south and west sides of the Tetons have the greatest distribution of this weak snow.  An avalanche failing on this layer could easily bury or injure a rider, so be wary of steep slopes than have this problem, avoid terrain traps, and practice safe travel techniques.

    Take a look at this recent avalanche that happened in Prater Canyon, in the Salt River Range. While this isn’t in this forecast zone, the snowpack is similar and this is a good reminder it is still possible to trigger an avalanche that fails on weak snow that was formed in January.

    A large avalanche south of JHMR that failed on weak snow in the middle of the snowpack. The avalanche was likely triggered by a piece of falling cornice. Most recent persistent slab avalanche events have occurred on the west and south side of the Tetons.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent weather has created a variety of snow surfaces out there. On March 7th there was a rain on snow event that deposited a breakable crust at all elevations and aspects in many areas. On March 9th we experienced very warm temperatures, with low elevations staying above freezing. Middle and upper elevations experienced above freezing temperatures and periods of powerful sun which continued to affect snow surfaces. So before the recent snow, we had a mixed bag of supportable and breakable crusts. On many aspects. 

So what does that mean for avalanche stability? Well it is hard to have definitive answers in this world, but warm weather does promote healing of buried weak layers in the long run. For the time being it leaves us with a slick bed surface in many areas, meaning avalanches could break a bit wider and run farther than expected.

From a riding quality perspective, these firm surfaces and strong winds can lead to variable travel conditions in wind affected terrain. Wind sheltered terrain will still be crusty underneath, but the new snow should improve quality a bit.
