Early on in the day your main concern should be wind slabs on all SW-S-SE facing slopes. Avalanche danger will continue to rise throughout the day as the next storm delivers its bounty. Scoured, icy surfaces will create touchy conditions at all elevations and aspects as the new snow falls. Shifting wind directions - primarily from out of the north to out of the south - will make it tricky to accurately predict which aspects have received wind-loading as the storm progresses throughout the day, and caution is advised when traveling on or below any slopes over 30 degrees.

    The past 36 hours saw moderate to heavy winds out of the north and northwest which helped move all the new, low-density snow down into gullies and the leeward, southern side of any ridgelines. With winds shifting to come out of the south, both the new snow falling today and the snow from the past 36 hours have the potential to be transported onto the north side of ridgelines and into gullies, chutes, and other terrain features. Because of the shifting wind directions, pay extra attention to micro-terrain features within the greater landscape.

    Winds are shifting to come out of the south and, as that so often means in this area, it's "game on" on for snowfall. We will potentially see snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour for the second half of today, and particularly into the later afternoon and evening. Storm slabs likely won't be an issue until later, and potentially not until the evening, depending on when these southerly flows decide to kick in today. But the potential for storm slabs on top of existing wind-loading is real and should not be taken lightly.

Avalanche Discussion

This is one of those days where it feels like we're practically writing two different forecasts. Conditions have the potential to change rapidly today, as the flows change from the north to the south. Expected heavy snowfall will fall on existing wind slabs or scoured surfaces,

Predicting afternoon conditions in the early morning can be tricky, so don't get lulled into a false sense of security if you don't see things happening right away. Keep your head on a swivel and know that at some point throughout the day the snow will begin to fall rapidly. Signs of instability should not be ignored when traveling in the backcountry today and into tomorrow.

If you're unsure about a particular slope or area, just remember, nobody ever had a bad time on low-angle pow.
