Natural and human triggered wet snow avalanches will be possible by the early afternoon on very steep slopes as warm temperatures continue today. Hard, wet slab avalanches will be more likely in the middle to lower elevations around rocks and cliffs that have heated surrounding snow the last several days. Use caution on or below avalanche prone slopes, such as distinguished avalanche paths, due to the uncertainty of wet slab avalanche potential.

    The snowpack has undergone serious change the last several days with unseasonably warm temperatures during the day and night. Wet snow avalanches will be possible by the afternoon once snow surfaces become wet and unsupportable. Hard, wet slab avalanches up to 2 feet deep may be possible on very steep slopes over 35°, especially around rocks and cliffs that heat up surrounding snow surfaces. Wet slab avalanches behave in unpredictable ways and can occur naturally. Limit exposure on or below steep, sustained avalanche paths. Wet slabs will be most likely in middle elevations, but could travel into the lower elevation terrain. Slopes in the lower elevations with a deeper snowpack such as northerly aspects will also be a concern. 

    Although smaller in size, wet loose avalanches will be possible if skies clear. Look for signs of the snow surfaces destabilizing such as wet snow, rollerballs, or natural wet avalanches. Wet loose and slab avalanches could occur in isolated areas in the upper elevations.

Warm Temperatures and Wet Snow

Temperature dropped below freezing for the first time in two days last night. This will slowly decrease the chance of wet snow avalanche problems. In order to completely eliminate the possibility of wet slab avalanches, temperatures will have to drop below freezing for a longer period (hopefully tomorrow). The problem is that free flowing water is still moving deeper through the snowpack, especially with rain falling last night in lower elevations. Free flowing water pools on layers within the snowpack causing wet slab avalanches. The short freeze late last night may only freeze the snow surface. Therefore, wet slab avalanches will remain a concern around elevations where temperatures rise well above freezing today. Upper elevations remained colder the last several days with temperatures below feezing last night continuing today reducing the chance of wet slab avalanches. 

There’s a high amount of uncertainty related to wet slab avalanches. Unlike other avalanche problems, they can be more difficult to predict and harder to manage. For this reason, it is advised to stay more conservative today around very steep, complex terrain.
