Avalanche conditions are dangerous. Large, naturally-occurring avalanches are possible and human-triggered avalanches are likely above 3000 feet in elevation including places like Tuckerman Ravine, Gulf of Slides, and Huntington Ravine. Conservative decision making and minimizing time spent in or underneath large open snow slopes is essential for safe travel today.

    What and where is it:New wind slabs could be multiple feet thick and found in north, east, and south-facing terrain above 3000 feet. These slabs are made up of newer and softer snow from a rapid increase in wind speed overnight, continuing through the day. Avalanches in new, softer drifts could have the ability to step down into a harder, older, more destructive persistent slab on top of a slick melt-freeze crust.How can you recognize it: Watch out for intense blowing snow and, if you have visibility, plumes of snow blowing at the ridgelines. This should be taken as a clear sign of dangerous wind slab formation. If you are in avalanche terrain and find deep drifts of snow that go past the tops of your boots, shooting cracks in the snowpack, or recent avalanches, you have found a dangerous wind slab.How can you manage it: Minimize time spent underneath large, open snow slopes and make conservative terrain choices if you choose to travel in or around avalanche terrain. Understand that natural avalanches are possible today and could run far into runout zones.

    What and where is it:Old, hard slabs are sitting on top of a slick melt-freeze crust formed on January 10th. These slabs are likely buried and hidden under new wind slabs between 3000 and 5000 feet in elevation on easterly aspects. 

    How can you recognize it: This avalanche problem won’t be identifiable from the snow surface. Recognize that large new wind slabs should be top-of-mind today and that this buried old slab could increase the destructive potential of a large wind slab avalanche today.

    How can you manage it: Minimize time spent underneath large, open snow slopes and make conservative terrain choices if you choose to travel in or around avalanche terrain. Understand that large natural avalanches are possible today and could run far into runout zones.

Avalanche Discussion

Today is not the day to try and outsmart the avalanche problem. Keep travel plans simple and understand that if avalanches occur today, they could travel far into runout areas. Expect dangerous avalanche conditions today from large new wind slabs forming on top of an already complex snowpack. Conservative decision making and smart terrain management is critical to move safely near avalanche terrain today. New wind slabs have the potential to be large with higher westerly winds than have been seen in a week, allowing new snow from yesterday and older soft snow from the past several days to be picked up and rapidly redistributed into easterly terrain. In some middle-elevation areas, new wind slabs are adding stress onto a deeper weak layer within the snowpack, creating the potential for new wind slab avalanches to ‘step down’ and create an even larger, more destructive avalanche. This possibility should be factored into your travel plans if you are considering going near avalanche runout zones like the floor of Tuckerman Ravine or the top of the Gulf of Slides Ski Trail.
