The snowpack is becoming increasingly stable, but the current precipitation is falling on variable surfaces accompanied by enough wind to transport new snow. Today there is potential for small wind slabs at upper elevations.
Winds are forecast to come from the southwest with enough strength to transport snow. Small wind slabs are possible on north and east aspects below ridgelines. New snow, totaling 2-4 inches, may not adhere well to the former surface where sun crusts were present.

Although our spring snowpack has been stabilizing nicely, as we found on Taft Peak yesterday, the new precipitation that started rolling in last night will add new variables. At higher elevations on the northerly and easterly aspects small wind slabs are possible with moderate winds predicted to come from the southwest. Pay attention to how the new snow bonds to the former surface – on southerly/westerly aspects with greater solar exposure, the new snow will land on a crust and may not adhere well.
Low temperatures and cloud cover will keep the upper snowpack “locked up” today, meaning typical spring problems are on pause for the time being.
Non-solar wind sheltered upper and mid elevation terrain is where the softest snow was yesterday, and where I would venture today.
