Wind deposits ranging in size and sensitivity will be of greatest concern today. Reactive wind slabs will be possible to find on all aspects. Be on the lookout for signs of continued slab development and be aware of terrain features that increase the consequences of an avalanche.

    Winds shifted to the north last night and have begun to drop in speed. It will be possible to find wind slabs ranging in size and sensitivity today on all aspects. Fresh deposits will be relatively small and sensitive while deposits from our recent storm will be large and are becoming more stubborn over time. While most concerning near and above treeline, be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting at all elevations. Leeward sides of ridgelines, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions are areas to watch out for.  Large human-triggered avalanches remain likely today and avalanches may run long distances and into lower angle, or treed terrain you may typically think of as “safe”.

    Snowfall rates diminished throughout the day yesterday and this recent storm snow is expected to gain strength relatively quickly. However, copious amounts of loose surface snow exist throughout the forecast area. Storm instabilities both slabs and sloughs have the potential to be large in size today. Approach steep terrain over 30° today with caution and be cognizant of your exposure to terrain features that increase the consequences of avalanches. This includes road cuts, gully features, cliff bands, and mid-slope depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

As we emerge from our recent string of storms and enter a period of quiet weather, it will be important to take stock and remain diligent.  Clear skies, soft snow, and shovel fatigue will be a powerful draw. However, avalanche hazard remains elevated and there are several logistical challenges and objective hazards to consider as well.

Deep snow will make for difficult travel.  It will be important to fight the urge to drift towards steep terrain. Keep in mind that deep snow immersion remains a risk to backcountry travelers. An otherwise innocuous fall could be dangerous today.  Keep your friends in sight and watch out for treewells.

This will be the first time the sun is out in a long time. While very cold temperatures and continued winds will limit the potential for loose wet activity, solar warming could help add sensitivity to wind deposits. We have added a very large load to the snowpack, and it will be important to let things settle.

Road crews have been working hard to clear roadways and parking lots but it may take some time for trailheads or less traveled access roads to be cleared.  Please be thoughtful and courteous in how you choose to park. Parking in front of snowbanks or access gates will prevent road crews from being able to clear the roads.
