Lo esencial

Triggering an avalanche remains possible on weak layers of snow buried 1-3 feet below the surface. These layers are widespread but may only be sensitive in specific locations where a firm cohesive snow has formed in the snowpack. Look for areas that have been previously wind loaded as well as obvious signs of instability such as cracking or audible collapsing of weak layers.

    Weak layers of snow formed in November and December are buried 1-3 feet deep. These weak, sugary facets are widespread across most aspects and elevations with increased sensitivity in areas with firm cohesive slabs in the snowpack such as upper elevations and/or wind loaded terrain. Depth hoar is developing at the base of the snowpack in specific areas. In addition, surface hoar layers in the upper portion of the snowpack have been identified on West and North aspects up to 10,000’.

Today Togwotee remains the odd one out between the three forecast zones with only a couple inches of new snow and far less variability. This means that avalanche conditions will be limited to persistent slabs, which by no means is a simple problem to deal with. Persistent slabs are particularly difficult to manage. There may be long intervals of no avalanche activity increasing confidence in the strength of the snowpack. Don't let these intervals of limited activity trick you. Actively manage terrain and keep those low probability and high consequence scenarios on your mind.
