Warming temperatures will increase the likelihood of wet-loose avalanches throughout the day. Move to cooler aspects when observing signs like rollerballs and point releases.

Upper-elevation leeward terrain could have fresh sensitive wind slabs that could break 6"-12" deep. Use caution near ridgelines and cornices where winds have been loading and cross-loading, and formed fresh slabs. Look for red flags like cracking and signs on the snow surface of transport.

    Lower elevations will be most likely to produce wet-loose avalanches in the upper snowpack that has been warm and seen rain up to 6,000 feet Friday. The Sun will bump up the likelihood of wet-loose potential if it comes out to heat up the surface of the snow, but the forecast is calling for mostly cloudy skies. 

    Temps are forecasted to reach above freezing today which will soften the surface of the snow all the way up to almost 8,000 feet. In steep terrain, you will have the potential to get the upper foot of the snowpack to move with you, especially on slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Look for red flags like cracking and signs on the snow surface of transport, and if you are seeing red flags choose another lower angle slope, or a slope that is not wind loaded.

    Wet loose, point releases on this South aspect from warm temperatures...an increasing trend we will see this week with temps soaring to over 50F Monday at 7,600 feet.

    Above 7,000 feet there are fresh wind slabs that formed yesterday from 2-4 inches of fresh snow. The size of these potential slabs is likely small in most locations, but play it safe and use caution in steep wind-loaded terrain, especially terrain that is exposed to rocks.Use caution near ridgelines and cornices where winds have been loading and cross-loading, and formed fresh slabs. Look for red flags like cracking and signs on the snow surface of transport.

This is our last Avalanche Forecast for the season. We will continue to update you with General Avalanche information over the next two weeks. We could not do it without you!

Avalanche problems can be winter and spring like…we still have a winter-like snowpack in our advisory area. It’s going to take days of warmer temps and melting and freezing to grow large grains and bond weak layers to give us a solid,  frozen spring snowpack. That looks like that may happen this week with temps climbing to over 50 degrees above 7,600 feet on Monday.

As we close, we have some helpful spring tips:

Continue to check and submit observations to our page. It will still function instantly and will be a good resource for your trip planning. There can still be times in the spring when snow can slide and bury you. Cold snow on north aspects can still produce loose dry sluffs, wind slabs, and sensitive cornices. Be extra careful when there’s rain, especially the first few hours of rain on snow. A  lack of the snowpack freezing overnight can make it all the same temperature, or isothermal. Re- freezing the snowpack, especially with a fresh blanket of 2 to 4 inches of snow, insulates the wet snowpack from an overnight freeze and can require multiple nights of freezing temps to solidify. Check the weather for high temps, and look at the hourly forecast for timing and what the sky cover is going to do throughout the day.Are there recent avalanches—-pinwheels and point releases? Are you on a Rocky slope in the afternoon?Heat-induced loose wet avalanches can come down from above, and snow sliding down to the bare rocks is possible when facets get wet they can pop with energy and clean off all the snow that leaves you in the rocks.

Don’t perish from failing to cover basics like having all your rescue and first aid gear: Transceiver, shovel, and  probes on your person, one at a time on slopes steep enough to slide, watching your partners from a safe spot, and checking your slope angles-does it increase, is it seep enough to slide, have an escape route or a Plan B for the day.
