Increasing ridgetop winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow, especially during the afternoon hours. New slabs are expected to form in localized areas where wind drifted snow fills in along the down wind side of terrain features. Areas of surface wet snow instability may form today, depending on cloud cover. Identify and move cautiously around suspect avalanche terrain, either where wind drifted snow is filling in or where surface wet snow exists.

    As ridgetop winds increase today, areas of blow and drifting snow are expected to form new areas of wind slab, especially this afternoon. SW winds will drift and redistribute snow on the ground, depositing it into cohesive slabs along the down wind side of ridgetops, gullies, and other terrain features on open slopes.

    Use clues such as visible blowing snow, cornices, wind drifts, snow surface texture, and snow surface cracking to identify slopes of concern. Move around these areas with caution. Opting for wind sheltered terrain below treeline reduces the risk of encountering this avalanche problem today.

    There is a fair bit of uncertainty today for this avalanche problem. Air temperatures are expected to warm into the mid 30s to mid 40s today, while at the same time cloud cover is forecast to become progressively thicker and lower. This cloud cover could either put a damper on snow surface melt, or it could help it spread to shaded areas and northerly aspects. Increasing winds are not expected to slow snow surface cooling until they increase more this afternoon. Exactly how warming air temperatures, cloud cover height/thickness, and winds combine today will dictate surface wet snow development extent and location.

    Look for signs of developing wet snow instability, such as roller balls occurring naturally as new snow melts and falls off of rocks and trees. The ability to trigger pinwheels and/or wet snow sluffs indicate that sufficient melt exists for larger wet loose avalanches to occur. If signs of surface wet snow are present, consider opting for lower angle terrain.

    Incoming solar radiation yesterday was strong enough to put a crust on the snow surface in sun exposed areas, mainly below about 9,000'.
