Lo esencial
You are unlikely to encounter avalanches today. Instead, primary hazards include variable surface conditions, exposed obstacles, and open creeks. Wind scoured slopes are firm and could result in long slides and/or runaway equipment. You'll find the best winter snow on shaded and wind sheltered slopes, or look for spring-like snow on sunny slopes.
Avalanche Discussion
- Cold, faceted snow remains on shaded aspects sheltered from winds.
- Some sunny slopes are supportable enough that midwinter corn is a possibility with good timing.
- Warm daytime temperatures have exposed rocks, bare ground, logs and stumps, and open water. On warm slopes, rockfall has been occuring.
- Wind exposed slopes near and above treeline have been scoured down to old, firm layers.
- Avoid steep, firm slopes to prevent long falls and runaway equipment.
- It couldn't hurt to start carrying your sharps kit (boot crampons, ski crampons, ice axe), and think ahead to deploy them before they become needed.
- Please consider submitting an observation using our website or the Avy app. This hones your skills, informs other users, and improves our forecasts.
