Lo esencial

Identify wind loaded slopes where riders could trigger avalanches on steep middle to upper elevation terrain. Look for signs of unstable snow including recent avalanches, shooting cracks, and large pillows/drifts. Although less likely, larger avalanches could fail on buried weak layers in steeper terrain. Tracking where these weak layers exist is critical before committing to any consequential terrain.

    Northwest-west wind over the last 48 hours has formed shallow soft slabs from recent low density snow 1-2 feet deep. Wind slabs will be most obvious and easiest to trigger in exposed upper elevation terrain above treeline, but could exist down into the middle elevations. Look for wind loaded snow in abnormal locations due to the wind direction. These could be off leeward ridgelines or cross-loaded open slopes. 

    Wind loaded slopes will be the most likely type of terrain to trigger an avalanche in today.

    A rain crust formed on Christmas exists on all aspects up to 10,000’. Although unlikely, this interface has the ability to produce avalanches 2-4 feet deep where weak snow grains are present above or below the crust. Determining where exactly the weak grains exist has been difficult due to their scattered distribution. Assessing if and where these weak grains exist is critical before committing to any steep, consequential terrain to avoid triggering a large avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

Up to 12 inches of snow has fallen over the last 48 hours with 2-3 feet since January 2nd. Wind increased yesterday with numerous observations reporting shooting cracks and recent avalanches as obvious signs of instability within  the recent snow. Most notable, the avalanche reported in Strawberry Creek around 9,000’ on an open, wind loaded slope. Keep an eye out for these clues today. Continued northwest to west wind 20-30 mph blew overnight along ridgelines. Identifying which slopes are potentially wind loaded will be critical to traveling safely through the mountains today. 

Deeper in the snowpack, a rain crust formed on Christmas has created a higher level of uncertainty. We have seen signs of the Christmas crust producing avalanches before this last series of storms (Jan 1-9). Identifying recent avalanche activity on this interface over the last week has been difficult due to poor visibility. This layer has shown signs of healing in snowpits, but it has not been proven innocent yet. Dig down and assess this weak layer by performing stability tests to track how it is changing over time.
