Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and gliding snow represent the main danger.

As a consequence of new snow and a storm force northwesterly wind, avalanche prone wind slabs formed in the last few days especially in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. The fresh and older wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence above the tree line. These can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases in all aspects above the tree line. Avalanches are medium-sized. Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found also in areas close to the tree line. Gliding avalanches are possible as a consequence of the rain. Caution is to be exercised on cut and grassy slopes at low altitude.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 15 to 25 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. The new snow and wind slabs are prone to triggering above the tree line. This also applies in areas close to the tree line. The new snow and wind slabs will be deposited on soft layers on wind-protected shady slopes at elevated altitudes. The rain will give rise to moistening of the snowpack at low altitude.

Tendency

The weather conditions will bring about a slight decrease in the avalanche danger.
