Avalanche Activity

To for 21/1. Existing snowpack consolidating and generally stable, isolated shallow windslab N and NE above 800m. Low hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The existing snowpack will continue to consolidate and become generally stable, as the freezing level lowers through the night. Isolated windslab deposits will develop through the morning on North and North-East aspects above 800 metres. These are not expected to be extensive and will be confined to wind sheltered locations such as gully tops and coire rims. All remaining cornices will be prone to collapse during the warmer spell in the afternoon. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Mild wet conditions will ease during the early part of the night. Showers will turn to snow above 500 metres, and continue till early afternoon when the freezing level rises above the summits. Precipitation will then become heavier and turn to rain at all levels. Strong predominately Southerly winds will gradually increase reaching gale by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: A mild day with very strong South-South-Westerly winds. Early this morning the freezing level rose above the summits and remained there all day. Precipitation turned to rain at all levels. ObservedSnowStability: Wet snow instabilities developed in recent windslab accumulations as precipitation turned to rain. After a period of significant instability this morning the snowpack is now consolidating. North-East through East to South aspects above 700 metres are most affected. Avalanche debris was observed on a North-East aspect at 700 metres from early this morning. Cornices are fragile and prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
