Avalanche Activity

NC for 21.03 Generally good stability. However, wet snow instabilities all aspects. Cornices weak prone to collapse. Low Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will remain generally well bonded; however, wet snow instabilities will be present on all aspects, particularly steep North-West to North-East slopes above 950 metres. Locations such as gully tops scarp slopes and crag aprons will be most affected. Cornices will be weak and prone to collapse. Elsewhere, the snow cover will remain patchy and limited to stream beds and hollows. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Southerly winds will steadily gain strength overnight and veer South-West to become storm force throughout the day. The freezing level will rise above the summits. Rain showers and sleet during the morning. Observed Weather Influences: Fresh snowfall in the morning gave way to a dry day. Freezing level rose from around 800 metres to 1000 metres during the day. Light Northerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack stability is generally good. The greatest areas are on mainly North-West to North-East aspects above 950 metres. Cornices above these aspects are weak and prone to collapse. Wet snow instabilities are also present, particularly on steep South facing slopes. Elsewhere the cover is patchy with a quickly diminishing thin layer of new snow mostly on bare ground. The avalanche hazard is Low.
