Snowpack

A lot of snow has fallen in the south since Friday. Before the snowfall, the old snow surface was mostly irregular. However, it was also angular in places, especially on north-facing slopes at a distance from ridgelines and sheltered from the wind.

In the north, on Friday and Saturday strong southerly winds led to the formation of wind slabs, which are now lightly covered with new snow and are therefore difficult to recognise. On Sunday, westerly winds resulted in more, mostly small wind slabs.

Gliding avalanches are still possible. This applies particularly to east-, south- and west-facing slopes below approximately 2600 m and more rarely to north-facing slopes below approximately 2200 m. These avalanches may be large in some cases in regions with a lot of snow.

Weather forecast until Monday, 12.02.2024

During Sunday night into Monday, there will be a little snowfall in the north above approximately 1000 m. During the day, only a little snow will fall in the east, with clear spells in the west. It will be quite sunny in the inneralpine regions and in the south.

New snow

From Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon, 5 to 10 cm of snow will fall widely on the northern flank of the Alps above approximately 1500 m.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, -5 °C in the north and -3 °C in the south.

Wind

• There will be moderate westerly winds in the north during the night and moderate to strong northwesterly winds in some areas in the south.
• There will be a weak westerly wind during the day.

It was mostly cloudy and precipitation fell at times, falling as snow above 1000 to 1400 m.

New snow

Since Saturday afternoon, the following amounts of fresh snow have been recorded above approximately 1800 m:

• Upper Valais Main Alpine Ridge from the Simplon area to the Nufenen along the border with Italy, Ticino: 20 to 30 cm;
• rest of the Main Alpine Ridge from the Simplon area to Val Müstair, Moesano, central Grisons: 10 to 20 cm;
• elsewhere: widely 5 to 10 cm.

This means that since Friday, the following amounts of fresh snow have fallen in total above approximately 2200 m:

• Upper Valais Main Alpine Ridge from the Simplon area to the Nufenen along the border with Italy, central part of the southern flank of the Alps, Val Bregaglia: 40 to 60 cm, in western Ticino up to 90 cm;
• rest of the Main Alpine Ridge from the Monte Rosa to the Ofen Pass, Upper Engadine: 20 to 40 cm;
• less elsewhere.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, -4 °C in the north and - 2 °C in the south.

Wind

There were moderate and locally strong westerly winds, with northwesterly winds in the south.

Trend until Wednesday, 14.02.2024

Little snow will fall in the northeast during Monday night into Tuesday. Tuesday will be mostly sunny. On Wednesday, there will only be some sunny spells in the northeast but it will mainly be dry. Otherwise, it will be quite sunny. There will be moderate to locally strong northerly winds in the south during Monday night into Tuesday. Otherwise, there will be a light to moderate westerly wind.

The danger of dry avalanches is falling rapidly in the south and gradually in other regions. Gliding avalanches are still possible, occasionally even large ones in regions with a lot of snow.
