Avalanche Activity

In the south snowfall to low altitudes. Increase in danger of dry avalanches as a consequence of new snow and wind. In localities where more than 40 cm of snow falls danger level 3 (considerable) may be reached in the early morning.

The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs that are forming above all adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls can be released easily, or, in isolated cases naturally in all aspects above approximately 2000 m. The fresh wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. The avalanche danger should be investigated very thoroughly in the relevant locality. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. These places are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in very isolated cases by winter sport participants.

Snowpack Structure

The soft wind slabs have formed especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally at elevated altitudes. The new snow is lying on a crust in all aspects above approximately 2400 m. The old snowpack is faceted. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes. This applies in particular above approximately 2300 m. In all regions only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year.

Tendency

Tuesday: Slight increase in danger of dry and moist avalanches as a consequence of warming.
