Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

The snowpack is locally highly variable and snow depths vary greatly depending on wind exposure. There is only little lying snow in the south. With the clear nights and good radiation conditions, the snowpack has become increasingly faceted. In addition, some surface hoar has formed on the surface of the snowpack.

The sometimes strong southerly winds have formed fresh snowdrift accumulations at altitude. With new fallen snow and westerly winds, mostly small snowdrift accumulations will develop on Saturday. These will build up on the unfavourable old snow surface, especially in places that are sheltered from the wind, and are prone to triggering. In addition, the northern Alpine ridge, Valais, the Gotthard region, northern and central Grisons and Engadine have weak layers in the middle of the snowpack in the region of melt-freeze crusts, some of which are still prone to triggering.
