Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and weakly bonded old snow require caution. In addition the danger of dry avalanches will increase towards the evening.

The more recent wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. These are to be found adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Mostly the avalanches are medium-sized. The wind slabs are covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. Weak layers exist in the snowpack on shady slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in some places by individual winter sport participants especially here. Especially transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack are unfavourable. Avalanches can in very isolated cases be triggered in the old snowpack and reach quite a large size. As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of moist avalanches being released will increase a little on very steep sunny slopes.

Snowpack Structure

Distinct weak layers exist deep in the snowpack on shady slopes. Somewhat older wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack, especially on very steep northwest, north and northeast facing slopes above approximately 2200 m. Over a wide area 5 to 20 cm of snow will fall in the evening above approximately 1500 m. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise to slight moistening of the snowpack on sunny slopes.
