Avalanche Activity

TOR for 20.2.22 Unstable windslab and cornice collapse possible on N to SE aspects above 700 metres overnight. Av Haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will go through a period of instability during the night as the temperatures rise above the summits. On North to South-East aspects above 700 metres avalanches are possible with steep terrain and the tops of gullies most affected. On these same aspects cornices will be prone to collapse. Later in the day the snowpack will begin to stabilise as the temperatures drops rapidly. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: During the evening there will be snow showers above 400 metres and gale force Southerly winds. During the early hours the freezing level will rise above the tops with precipitation turning to rain or sleet on the highest summits. By morning winds will become predominantly Westerly increasing yet further in strength. Showers will turn to snow as the freezing level drops progressively to 300 metres by the end of the forecast period. Observed Weather Influences: A cold, dry and sunny day with light Southerly winds. Summit temperatures around minus 4C. ObservedSnowStability: Weakly bonded windslab has accumulated on North to South-East aspects above 700 metres. On these same aspects cornices continue to develop. Weaknesses in the snowpack observed during field observations on an Easterly aspect at 750. Many ridges and slopes exposed to recent Westerly winds are scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
