Lo esencial

With little change happening in the weather, little has changed in the avalanche conditions.

A weak layer may still produce avalanches, be careful in shallow areas.

Problemas de aludes

  • Persistent Slabs

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Unlikely
    Tamaño
    1.5–2.5

A weak layer of facets may be found 70 to 150 cm deep. In shallower inland areas, weak depth hoar exists to ground.

Confidence

High

  • We are confident due to a stable weather pattern.
  • We are confident that there are persistent slabs in the snowpack, but uncertain about how likely they are to trigger.

Avalanche Summary

January 16 to 23

  • No new avalanches reported but observations are limited. Consider posting to the MIN if you are out in the mountains!

Snowpack Summary

The upper 30 to 40 cm has been significantly altered by extreme southerly wind with scoured south facing slopes and loaded, pressed and sculpted, north facing slopes.

Below 1300 m and on south facing slopes a crust is present on or under the recent snow. This crust has a layer of surface hoar that is growing on it.

A weak layer of facets is buried 80 to 150 cm deep. In shallow snowpack areas, the bottom half of the snowpack is composed of weak depth hoar.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avoid areas with a thin or variable snowpack.
