Avalanche Activity

Weakly bonded old snow and gliding snow represent the main danger. In the valleys bordering the Pallaresa basin a moderate danger will prevail.

The old wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases on very steep northeast, north and northwest facing slopes. They are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack on shady slopes. The avalanches are rather small. In the Port de la Bonaigua sector, in the Gerber and Àrreu valleys and in the Marimanha valley and the Baciver circus and above approximately 2100 m the avalanche prone locations are a little more prevalent and the danger is level 2 (moderate). In other regions these avalanche prone locations are more rare and the danger is level 1 (low). In places that are protected from the wind: The old snowpack is faceted and weak. This snow can be released by a single winter sport participant on extremely steep northeast, north and northwest facing slopes. Here the avalanches are only shallow. In addition from midday on southeast, south and west facing slopes, further individual small gliding avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack at transitions into gullies and bowls. Released avalanches and stability tests confirm the existence of a weak snowack on shady slopes. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes there are 50 to 80 cm of snow, and even more in some localities. At low and intermediate altitudes hardly any snow is lying.

Tendency

The danger of dry and moist avalanches will decrease gradually.
