Avalanche Activity

The new snow and wind slabs of the last few days represent the main danger.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind, sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed in the last few days in particular in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. In particular transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack are unfavourable. Small and medium-sized natural avalanches are possible on steep slopes. New snow and wind slabs can in some cases be released by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area over a wide area 15 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last few days above approximately 1500 m. The new snow and wind slabs are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. Over a wide area new snow is lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. Weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack can be released in isolated cases and mostly by large additional loads in particular in places that are protected from the wind.
