Avalanche Activity

Some snow will fall. The avalanche prone locations are covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise.

The fresh snow as well as the sometimes large wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant above approximately 2500 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in steep terrain at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions and at transitions into gullies and bowls. Along the border with France the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. These places are sometimes covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise.

Snowpack Structure

5 to 15 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. The new snow is lying on soft layers on shady slopes above approximately 2500 m. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Individual weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, in particular at high altitude.
