Anywhere from a dusting to 10 cm of snow overlies a hard melt-freeze crust. Strong northerly wind may create small, isolated wind slabs near mountain tops.

Avalanche Summary

Explosives triggered a very large wet slab avalanche near Pine Pass during warm weather on Tuesday.

Cooler weather has decreased the likelihood of avalanches. Assess for small wind slabs in steep terrain if you find new snow in your local area.

  • Carefully evaluate steep lines for wind slabs.
  • Be alert to conditions that change with elevation, aspect, and exposure to wind.
  • Pay attention to cornices and give them a wide berth when traveling on or below ridges.
