Lo esencial

The Avalanche Hazard in the West Central Mountains will rise to Moderate today.  Human-triggered avalanches are possible where the upper 6-12 inches of snow is not bonded well to slick crusts. As the Sun and warmer temperatures heat up the snow surface, expect to see natural wet-loose avalanches and rollerballs. Avoid steep solar aspects that are showing signs of overheating, especially afternoon.  Gusty winds have swirled around the compass and have created slabs in upper elevation exposed terrain that may still be sensitive. Use caution in and around wind-loaded terrain and cornices.

    Wet loose avalanche potential will rise through the day as the snow surface gets heated up. Watch for signs of unstable snow like rollerballs and point releases. East aspects are going to shed snow first this morning. As the heat increases, choose other aspects that are not getting direct solar radiation, or that are not steeper than 30 degrees or connected to steep terrain.

    Skiers have been able to kick loose wet-loose avalanches 4-6 inches deep over the last few days. Here is an observation from Sgt's that we got yesterday.

     The direction of the wind has been variable over the last few days. With most of the snow having been pushed around already, and the amount of time since the storm we would expect that most slabs have bonded, but given the sustained erratic spring wind effect, and all of our slick crusts that have snow resting on them, I would not completely rule out possibly triggering a wind slab in upper elevation exposed steep terrain.

     Be cautious near exposed ridges, and in upper elevation, steep, leeward terrain, especially Northern aspects below upper ridges and cornices where recent wind slabs have most likely formed.

    If you are hearing hollow sounds or whoomphing, or you are seeing red flags like shooting cracks, or obvious sculpting and drifting be cautious and choose another route or slope.

Avalanche Discussion

Skiers have been triggering wet-loose avalanches earlier this week and submitted some good observations...The new snow over the past few days has brought back winter, but the warming temperatures and the Spring Sun will come out and create we-loose avalanche potential on steep solar aspects. Our new snow is resting on slick crusts, and not bonded well on steep Southern aspects. Below the new snow, the bonding of recent saturated layers is pretty good in most places where the crust wasn't as stout. For now, we are concerned with the new snow, that has formed variable wind slabs and loose avalanche problems.

There are closures for motorized travel in and around the local ski areas, in the Lick Creek Canyon,  Granite Mtn, Jug Mountain, and other areas throughout our region.  Check out the Winter Travel Map to find out where you can shred on your sled or moto.  Not all of these areas are signed, it is your responsibility to know where these closures exist.
