Avalanche Activity

At transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack the likelihood of avalanches being released is greater.

Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes. In isolated cases the avalanches can be triggered in deep layers of the snowpack and reach medium size. This applies in particular in case of a large load. The avalanche prone locations are rare but are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow of last week is poorly bonded in all aspects below approximately 2600 m. In many cases new snow is lying on a hard crust. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack on shady slopes. In all regions in all altitude zones only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year.
