You can trigger an avalanche where new snow forms cohesive slabs above slick crusts and wind-drifted surfaces. Cracking in the snow surface or avalanches on similar slopes are obvious signs of instability and a good indication to move to lower-angle terrain.
Avoid steep slopes where you find more than about 10 inches of storm snow. You can find safer travel on slopes less than about 30 degrees.
